Mariam was in particular danger because she used her education to campaign for women’s rights. Her entirely peaceful activities forced her to flee not only Afghanistan, but also Pakistan, where she had initially sought sanctuary.
In the 1970s she was a leading member of the Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan (RAWA), a left-wing organization opposed to the Soviet-backed Afghan Government as well as Afghanistan’s armed Mujahideen groups. Many members of RAWA were assassinated. In the late 1980s and early 1990s she continued advocating women’s rights in defiance of the increasingly dominant Mujahideen groups. After receiving repeated death threats, she fled to Pakistan.
There she continued promoting women’s rights. Again, she was threatened by Afghan Mujahideen groups who continue to operate in border areas in Pakistan. Attempts were also made to kill members of her family living in Quetta, Pakistan. The Pakistani police have offered little protection to those targeted by Mujahideen groups. A leading member of RAWA, Mina Keshwar Kamal, who was known to be in danger in Pakistan, was raped and killed in her house in Quetta in 1987.
Mariam sought refuge in a Norwegian church after she was refused asylum on the grounds that it was safe for her to return to Pakistan.
