KABUL - A court in Kabul sentenced eleven people up to eight years in jail on Saturday for bribing election officials on behalf of a candidate during the parliamentary vote in September 2010. In an open trial the primary court of counter corruption department also released one person because of a lack of evidence. The convicts included five money changers at Kabul Shahzada Market. They were identified as Noorudin, Amanullah, Sayed Atiqullah, Toryalai and Jamaludin. Others are Muhammad Shah Pur, Abdul Malik, an employee of a construction company, Zainudin, a property dealer, Ghulam Sarwar and a shopkeeper, Mualavi Muhammad Ismail. They were also fined for brokering deal between candidates and election officials. Two months back, the Attorney General Office ordered the arrest of the 12 people for transferring $220,000 from Badakhshan province on the behalf of a candidate Sayed Jafar Naderi, son of Mansoor Naderi. An official at the Attorney General Office said the money was transferred by a host of Sayed Mansoor Naderi, Mualavi Muhammad Ismail, to Shahzada market and handed over to the construction company’s employee. The money was to be received by a member of election commission after the success of Sayed Jafar Naderi in the election, he said. After hearing the arguments, the judge sentenced to five years in jail Ismail, Abdul Aziz, Noorudin, Amanullah and Sayed Atiqullah. Shah Pur was sent to jail for eight years in addition to $220 000 fine. Toryalai and Jamaludin were sentenced to three years in jail, with a fine of $100 000. Ghulam Sarwar and Abdul Malik were awarded one year jail term each. However, Sayed Parwiz was found innocent for a lack of evidence. The convicts said that the trial was not fair, denying the charges levied by the attorney general against them. They said it as a conspiracy and that they would challenge the verdict in upper court. Sayed Mansoor Naderi, from Baghlan, his daughter Zahra Naderi from Kabul, his nephew from Kunduz and his son from Badakhshan ran in the elections, but only his son was unable to make it to the parliament.
