Is New York Burning? by Larry Collins
and Dominique Lapierre: The authors of Is Paris Burning?
have now set their sights on the US. This is a work of
fiction set in post-9/11 America where some terrorists
plan to take a nuclear bomb from Pakistan to New York in
a container of basmati rice. Coming as it does at a time
when Bush and his team are still reeling under the
worldwide condemnation of the torture of Iraqi soldiers,
this promises to be one scorcher of a book. It’s being
published by Full Circle.
Chronicle of an Impossible Election
by J.M. Lyngdoh: The book, written by the former Chief
Election Commissioner, is an account of his days in
office. It has been published by Penguin. Expect some
sparks since the book also talks about the handling of
the Assembly elections in Gujarat in 2003.
In the Name of the Father by Rahul
Singh: He may revel in being ‘‘not a nice man to know’’,
but you can’t help knowing Khushwant Singh. Find out
even more about the naughty sardar in this biography by
his son Rahul. The book is part of Roli Books’ ‘‘Family
Pride Series’’. Should contain some novel facts about
the man who revels in being a man most people love to
hate.
Transmission by Hari Kunzru: After
creating a favourable impression with his earlier novel
The Impressionist, Kunzru is ready to take you on
another transcontinental tour. Look out for a high-tech
mix of London, Bollywood and the Silicon Valley in his
latest novel. Also from Penguin.
The Arrangements of Love: After
wowing readers across the globe with his bestseller Taj,
Timeri N. Murari is back with The Arrangements of Love
(Penguin). The novel traces the journey of a young man
in search of an elusive author, who turns out to be the
father he has never known.
Nehru’s Trilogy: On the occasion of
the late prime minister’s 40th death anniversary,
Penguin is reprinting three of Jawaharlal Nehru’s
books—An Autobiography, The Discovery of India and
Glimpses of World History: Being Further Letters to His
Daughter, Written in Prison and Containing a Rambling
Account of History for Young People.
Also in the picture: For those
interested in regional literature, A Place to Live:
Contemporary Tamil Literature, edited by Dilip Kumar
(Penguin) is being released in June. Children are also
in for a good time with Tara Press bringing to India
Lobster Press’ series for kids—Max-a-million (for boys)
and Abby and Tess (for girls). Also, Penguin is bringing
out the Ladybird Favourite Tales in paperback.
There’s something for everyone in the hot days ahead.
